Regional comparisons give this week its shape. Hopewell at Petersburg matches the first two teams in Region 3A. Chilhowie at Rye Cove does the same in 1D. James Madison at South Lakes brings together two 6–1 teams in Class 6’s top seven, while Liberty Christian at Brookville puts a higher-ranked visitor against an unbeaten host.

The games at the top of my list

All seven featured games are scheduled for Friday, October 23, at 7 p.m. Eastern. Each class and region rank refers to the team’s own classification.

Game to watch / 1Class 3 headliner

Hopewell at Petersburg: the first two teams in Region 3A

Hopewell (6–1) at Petersburg (6–0) — Fri., Oct. 23, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 3 #3 / Class 3 #1. Region ranks: 3A #2 / 3A #1.

Petersburg is first in Class 3 and Region 3A in this week’s rankings. Hopewell is third in the class and second in the region. With the October 19 snapshot listing Petersburg at 6–0 and Hopewell at 6–1, this is the clearest meeting of highly ranked regional contenders on my list.

Hopewell has scored 290 points in seven games, averaging 41.4. Petersburg has allowed 32 in six, or 5.3 per game. That contrast makes the matchup: can Hopewell keep its offense productive against the strongest defensive total among these two teams? Petersburg’s own 37.5-point scoring average gives it another way to control the game. The records and averages here use the local ranking snapshot, rather than mixing in a different source’s game count.

Game to watch / 2Region 6D showdown

James Madison at South Lakes: matching records, different scoring profiles

James Madison (6–1) at South Lakes (6–1) — Fri., Oct. 23, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 6 #4 / Class 6 #7. Region ranks: 6D #2 / 6D #3.

Both teams are 6–1, and both sit in Class 6’s top seven. Madison is fourth in the class and second in Region 6D; South Lakes is seventh and third. This game offers a direct comparison between two teams trying to stay near the top of a deep region.

South Lakes has scored 262 points, averaging 37.4, while Madison has scored 157, averaging 22.4. Madison’s defense has the better raw total, 76 points allowed against 94 for South Lakes. Can Madison keep this closer to its usual defensive pace of 10.9 allowed per game, or can South Lakes turn its larger scoring average into the deciding advantage? The shared record makes the contrast especially useful.

Game to watch / 3Unbeaten host

Liberty Christian at Brookville: Brookville meets the higher-ranked visitor

Liberty Christian (6–1) at Brookville (7–0) — Fri., Oct. 23, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 3 #6 / Class 3 #9. Region ranks: 3C #3 / 3C #4.

Brookville is 7–0, but Liberty Christian, at 6–1, has the better rankings: Class 3 #6 and Region 3C #3, compared with Brookville’s #9 and #4. An unbeaten record matters, but it does not settle how these teams compare.

Their scoring averages are close: 34.9 for Brookville and 33.4 for Liberty Christian. The defensive totals are farther apart. Liberty Christian has allowed 64 points in seven games, or 9.1 per game; Brookville has allowed 121, or 17.3. Brookville will need its offense to keep working against a defense that has yielded considerably less. Liberty Christian has an opportunity to make its ranking advantage persuasive by winning on the road.

Game to watch / 4Two region leaders

Radford at Carroll County: Carroll County faces another strong visitor

Radford (6–1) at Carroll County (7–0) — Fri., Oct. 23, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 2 #5 / Class 3 #5. Region ranks: 2C #1 / 3D #1.

Radford leads Region 2C at 6–1. Carroll County leads Region 3D at 7–0. Both rank fifth in their respective classes, although equal positions in different classifications are not a claim of equal strength.

Carroll County averages 43.6 points scored and 10.0 allowed. Radford averages 40.1 scored and 11.7 allowed. Those are strong profiles on both sides, and they give this matchup more substance than an unbeaten team simply protecting its record. Radford needs to sustain its offensive production against another low-scoring defense. Carroll County can reinforce its place at the top of 3D by handling a visitor that has scored 281 points in seven games.

Game to watch / 5Region 1D leaders

Chilhowie at Rye Cove: a perfect visitor meets its closest regional challenger

Chilhowie (7–0) at Rye Cove (6–1) — Fri., Oct. 23, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 1 #4 / Class 1 #9. Region ranks: 1D #1 / 1D #2.

Chilhowie is 7–0, fourth in Class 1 and first in Region 1D. Rye Cove is 6–1, ninth in the class and second in the region. A meeting of the region’s first two teams belongs near the top of any small-school watch list.

Chilhowie has outscored opponents 302–54, averaging 43.1 scored and 7.7 allowed. Rye Cove’s totals are 220–126, or 31.4 scored and 18.0 allowed. The raw numbers favor Chilhowie, but Rye Cove gets the game at home. Its first task is to keep Chilhowie from reaching its usual scoring pace; Chilhowie’s defense can make that task harder by limiting the host’s opportunities to answer.

Game to watch / 6Southeastern test

Hickory at King’s Fork: a winning visitor challenges a Class 5 leader

Hickory (6–1) at King’s Fork (6–0) — Fri., Oct. 23, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 5 #16 / Class 5 #3. Region ranks: 5A #3 / 5B #1.

King’s Fork is 6–0, third in Class 5 and first in Region 5B. Hickory is 6–1, 16th in the class and third in Region 5A. The rankings give the host a substantial edge, while Hickory’s six wins make this a worthwhile test of that advantage.

King’s Fork averages 38.7 points scored and 9.2 allowed. Hickory averages 21.1 scored and 16.3 allowed. For Hickory, containing the home offense is only half the challenge: it also needs to find points against a defense that has allowed 55 in six games. King’s Fork can strengthen its unbeaten start by making both sides of its scoring profile hold up against another winning team.

Game to watch / 7Class 5 top eight

Hermitage at Highland Springs: a direct comparison near the top of Region 5C

Hermitage (5–2) at Highland Springs (6–1) — Fri., Oct. 23, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 5 #8 / Class 5 #5. Region ranks: 5C #3 / 5C #1.

Highland Springs leads Region 5C and ranks fifth in Class 5 at 6–1. Hermitage is third in the region and eighth in the class at 5–2. The records differ, but both belong in the class’s top eight in this snapshot.

Their defensive totals are almost identical: 90 points allowed by Hermitage and 91 by Highland Springs, each over seven games. The separation comes on offense, where Highland Springs averages 35.9 to Hermitage’s 27.9. Hermitage’s clearest route is to keep the home offense closer to the defensive pace it has maintained all season. Highland Springs will want that eight-point difference in scoring averages to translate against a defense with nearly the same season total as its own.

Around the regions

The tables include 120 schools across 24 regions, ordered #1 through #5 within each region, starting at 6A and continuing through 1D. “Vs.” means home and “at” means away. Teams with an explicit bye remain listed. All records use the October 19 snapshot, and all kickoff times are Eastern.

The master schedule is still dated September 23. Huguenot’s Friday kickoff has conflicting listings, noted in Region 4B. Chincoteague’s separate school calendar is cited in Region 1A.

Sources and schedule notes

All records, scoring totals, ratings and ranks come from the matching Week 8 class and region rankings, updated October 19, 2026, at 7:21 a.m.: class rankings and region rankings. These are Beyond the Standings rankings, not official VHSL playoff points or seeds. The linked pages may change; the figures in this post remain frozen to that update. Per-game scoring averages divide points by wins, losses and ties combined. Records are reproduced from the local rankings, and outside standings have not been mixed into that snapshot.

Games, home/away designations, kickoff times and explicit byes follow the VHSL master schedule, linked on the VHSL football page and checked October 22. The available PDF remains dated September 23. Hopewell–Petersburg’s game listing and Madison–South Lakes’ listing also show Friday at 7 p.m. Chincoteague’s school calendar and Huguenot’s conflicting kickoff listings are linked in their regional sections.

All times are Eastern. Check host-school announcements before traveling, especially where a discrepancy is noted. This preview covers upcoming October 22–24 games; a missing schedule entry has not been treated as a bye.
