October opens with several unbeaten teams facing opponents capable of making them work to keep that zero in the loss column. William Byrd at Radford gives us two 4–0 teams on Thursday. Friday brings Manchester at Midlothian, Stafford at Colonial Forge and Salem at Patrick Henry (Roanoke), all matching an undefeated team against a team with just one loss.
This is the first edition of a weekly look at the most intriguing VHSL games. For the October 1–3, 2026 slate, I’m emphasizing strong records on both sides, high class rankings and meaningful regional comparisons. An unbeaten record gets my attention, but the opponent matters too.
The games at the top of my list
These seven matchups lead my watch list. Each class and region rank refers to the team’s own classification.
William Byrd at Radford: two perfect records, one early highlight
William Byrd (4–0) at Radford (4–0) — Thu., Oct. 1, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 3 #7 / Class 2 #12. Region ranks: 3D #3 / 2C #4.
Thursday’s unbeaten matchup is one of the week’s best. William Byrd has outscored its opponents 150–30, while Radford holds a 168–28 advantage. Both have won four games while allowing fewer than eight points per game.
Byrd’s No. 7 position in Class 3 gives it the stronger standing within its classification, but Radford’s production and home field make this much more than an undefeated team protecting its record against a struggling opponent. Can Radford’s offense maintain its pace against a defense that has allowed just 30 points? That’s the question that makes this one worth a Thursday night trip.
Manchester at Midlothian: the best combination of record and ranking
Manchester (5–0) at Midlothian (4–1) — Fri., Oct. 2, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 6 #3 / Class 5 #7. Region ranks: 6A #2 / 5C #3.
Manchester is No. 3 in Class 6 and No. 2 in Region 6A. Midlothian is No. 7 in Class 5 and No. 3 in Region 5C. With a combined 9–1 record and both teams in their class’s top seven, this is my leading Friday matchup.
Manchester has allowed just 21 points in five games, an average of 4.2. Midlothian has scored 177, averaging 35.4. Those figures came against different schedules, but they establish the central matchup: a productive Midlothian offense against one of the stingiest defenses among this week’s featured teams. A road win would strengthen Manchester’s unbeaten start; a Midlothian win would add a victory over a highly ranked Class 6 opponent.
Stafford at Colonial Forge: a Region 6B comparison worth watching
Stafford (4–0) at Colonial Forge (4–1) — Fri., Oct. 2, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 6 #5 / Class 6 #17. Region ranks: 6B #2 / 6B #6.
Stafford brings a 176–22 scoring advantage and a 4–0 record into this Commonwealth District game. Colonial Forge is 4–1 and has outscored its opponents 154–59.
Both teams are in Region 6B, where Stafford sits second and Colonial Forge sixth in my rankings. That makes this especially useful as a direct comparison between regional contenders. Stafford has the better record and ranking, but Colonial Forge offers winning opposition on the road. Can Stafford keep controlling games against a team that has allowed only 11.8 points per outing?
Salem at Patrick Henry (Roanoke): an unbeaten visitor meets a higher-rated host
Salem (5–0) at Patrick Henry (Roanoke) (4–1) — Fri., Oct. 2, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 4 #11 / Class 5 #6. Region ranks: 4D #6 / 5C #2.
Salem is 5–0 with 232 points scored, while Patrick Henry is 4–1 with 209. Their scoring averages—46.4 and 41.8—give this game plenty of offensive appeal, although they don’t guarantee a shootout.
The ratings add another reason to watch: Patrick Henry’s 117.517 is above Salem’s 114.319, despite Salem’s perfect record. Patrick Henry also sits second in Region 5C. Salem is sixth in Region 4D, a reminder that an unbeaten record and a regional ranking can tell different stories. This is a strong test of how those records translate against another winning team.
Handley at Kettle Run: eight wins between them
Handley (4–0) at Kettle Run (4–1) — Fri., Oct. 2, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 4 #7 / Class 3 #15. Region ranks: 4D #4 / 3B #2.
Handley has scored 216 points in four games, an average of 54. Kettle Run has scored 189 in five, averaging 37.8, while allowing 15 per game.
Handley’s top-seven Class 4 ranking makes the unbeaten visitor attractive, but Kettle Run’s No. 2 position in Region 3B is the reason this game stands out. This is an opportunity for Kettle Run to measure itself against a strong team from the next classification up. For Handley, it’s a chance to extend a perfect start against an opponent with a 4–1 record.
Oakton at Langley: another unbeaten team faces a road test
Oakton (4–0) at Langley (4–1) — Fri., Oct. 2, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 6 #10 / Class 6 #18. Region ranks: 6D #3 / 6D #6.
Oakton enters 4–0 and third in Region 6D. Langley is 4–1 and sixth in the same region. Their scoring totals are remarkably similar on a per-game basis: Oakton averages 44.5 points, Langley 41.0.
Oakton’s top-ten Class 6 position gives it the ranking edge, but Langley has enough production to make this an appealing matchup. The regional connection adds value: this result will provide a direct comparison between two teams that have combined for eight wins and one loss.
Glenvar at Carroll County: the record doesn’t tell the whole story
Glenvar (3–2) at Carroll County (5–0) — Fri., Oct. 2, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 2 #4 / Class 3 #5. Region ranks: 2C #1 / 3D #2.
Carroll County’s start is hard to ignore: 5–0, 219 points scored and just 20 allowed. It is fifth in Class 3 and second in Region 3D.
Glenvar is the exception to the unbeaten-or-one-loss pattern among these seven featured games. At 3–2, it still ranks No. 4 in Class 2 and No. 1 in Region 2C. That ranking earns this game attention even though Glenvar has been outscored 75–51. Carroll County has the much stronger scoring profile; Glenvar’s standing makes this a useful test of how much more the ratings see beyond its record.
