Riverbend at Colonial Forge leads my Week 8 list: two 6–1 teams, a productive Class 5 offense and the leader of Region 6B. Several unbeaten teams also face opponents with strong records. Oakton visits Westfield, Sherando hosts Kettle Run, and Carroll County hosts Floyd County. In Class 1, Parry McCluer at Craig County puts a higher-ranked visitor against an unbeaten host.
For the October 15–17 slate, I’m looking for games that help separate regional contenders and test perfect records against meaningful opposition. All records, scoring totals and rankings below are frozen from my Week 7 update of October 11. They are a consistent snapshot, rather than live records; they do not include any games played after that update. Scoring averages describe different schedules and are not score predictions.
The games at the top of my list
All seven featured games are scheduled for Friday, October 16, at 7 p.m. Eastern. Class and region ranks refer to each team’s own classification.
Riverbend at Colonial Forge: two contenders with different ways to impress
Riverbend (6–1) at Colonial Forge (6–1) — Fri., Oct. 16, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 5 #11 / Class 6 #5. Region ranks: 5D #2 / 6B #1.
Riverbend’s 44.9 points per game and 10.6 allowed give it the stronger raw scoring profile. Colonial Forge averages 34.1 scored and 14.3 allowed, but holds the higher rating and leads Region 6B. Those differences make this more interesting than simply choosing the team with the bigger scoring margin.
Both are 6–1. Riverbend needs its scoring pace to travel against a host ranked fifth in Class 6. For Forge, holding Riverbend below its usual production would shift the game toward an offense that has already scored 239 points. This is my first stop on the Friday watch list: a strong Class 5 visitor against a regional leader from Class 6.
Oakton at Westfield: another demanding stop in Region 6D
Oakton (6–0) at Westfield (5–1) — Fri., Oct. 16, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 6 #2 / Class 6 #15. Region ranks: 6D #1 / 6D #5.
Oakton is 6–0, second in Class 6 and first in Region 6D. Westfield is 5–1, 15th in the class and fifth in the region. Oakton has the ranking advantage, but this is another winning opponent on the road in a region with several credible challengers.
Oakton has scored 256 points in six games, averaging 42.7. Westfield has allowed 148, or 24.7 per game. That is the pressure point for the home team: can it make Oakton work harder for points than the visitor’s season average suggests? Westfield’s 32.8-point scoring average gives it a way to answer, while Oakton’s defense, allowing 17.5, has a chance to make the gap between the teams show up on the field.
Centreville at James Madison: two 5–1 teams, two strong defenses
Centreville (5–1) at James Madison (5–1) — Fri., Oct. 16, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 6 #12 / Class 6 #6. Region ranks: 6D #4 / 6D #2.
Centreville and James Madison both enter 5–1, with Madison second in Region 6D and Centreville fourth. Madison’s sixth-place Class 6 ranking is six spots ahead of Centreville’s. This is a particularly useful direct comparison between teams with the same record.
Madison has allowed 55 points in six games, an average of 9.2, while Centreville has allowed 80, or 13.3. Centreville has the higher scoring average, 25.5 to 21.5. I’m interested in whether Centreville can preserve that offensive edge against the better defensive total. For Madison, keeping the game near its usual defensive pace would reduce the burden on an offense that has scored 129 points.
Kettle Run at Sherando: a region leader visits a Class 4 contender
Kettle Run (5–1) at Sherando (6–0) — Fri., Oct. 16, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 3 #12 / Class 4 #4. Region ranks: 3B #1 / 4D #2.
Kettle Run leads Region 3B at 5–1. Sherando is 6–0, fourth in Class 4 and second in Region 4D. That gives this game a clear appeal: a regional leader testing itself against a highly ranked opponent from the next classification up.
Sherando averages 40.5 points scored and 16.0 allowed; Kettle Run averages 37.8 scored and 17.2 allowed. The raw scoring profiles are closer than the class rankings alone might suggest, although they came against different opposition. Kettle Run needs to keep its offense productive without allowing Sherando to set a 40-point pace. Sherando can strengthen its unbeaten start by controlling a visitor that has already scored 227 points.
Floyd County at Carroll County: a regional leader challenges a perfect record
Floyd County (5–1) at Carroll County (6–0) — Fri., Oct. 16, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 2 #7 / Class 3 #7. Region ranks: 2C #1 / 3D #2.
Floyd County is No. 7 in Class 2 and leads Region 2C at 5–1. Carroll County is No. 7 in Class 3, second in Region 3D and 6–0. Matching class ranks do not mean matching strength across classifications, but both teams have earned a prominent place within their own fields.
Carroll County has outscored opponents 257–41, while Floyd County holds a 199–53 advantage. Both have played six games, so the defensive averages are directly comparable as descriptive totals: 6.8 allowed for Carroll and 8.8 for Floyd. Carroll’s 42.8-point scoring average meets a defense that has rarely yielded much. Floyd’s task is to keep that offense contained while finding enough points against an even stingier season total.
Central (Lunenburg) at Buckingham County: Central’s perfect start meets a winning host
Central (Lunenburg) (6–0) at Buckingham County (5–1) — Fri., Oct. 16, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 2 #6 / Class 2 #9. Region ranks: 2A #3 / 2B #2.
Central (Lunenburg) is 6–0 and sixth in Class 2. Buckingham County is 5–1 and ninth. Central ranks third in Region 2A, while Buckingham is second in Region 2B, making this a useful comparison across regions as well as a matchup of top-ten Class 2 teams.
Central has scored 212 points and allowed 48 in six games. Buckingham has scored 159 and allowed 63 in the same number. Central’s 35.3-point scoring average is the stronger offensive number; Buckingham’s 10.5 allowed suggests it can make that production harder to sustain. Buckingham will want to keep the game near its defensive pace, while Central has a chance to show its unbeaten start holds up against another highly ranked team.
Parry McCluer at Craig County: a perfect host faces the higher-ranked visitor
Parry McCluer (6–1) at Craig County (5–0) — Fri., Oct. 16, 7 p.m.. Class ranks: Class 1 #11 / Class 1 #19. Region ranks: 1C #2 / 1C #5.
Craig County is 5–0, but Parry McCluer, at 6–1, sits higher in both Class 1 and Region 1C: class #11 and region #2, compared with Craig’s #19 and #5. This is exactly the kind of game where the record and the ratings tell different parts of the story.
Craig has scored 286 points in five games, averaging 57.2, and allowed only 48. Parry McCluer has scored 205 and allowed 94 in seven games. Those totals come against different schedules, so Craig’s much larger scoring average does not settle the matchup. The question is whether Craig can keep producing at anything close to that rate against the higher-rated visitor. Parry McCluer can turn its ranking edge into a much more persuasive argument by winning on the road.
Around the regions
These tables include 120 schools across 24 regions, ordered #1 through #5 within each region, from 6A through 1D. “Vs.” means home and “at” means away. Confirmed byes remain listed. All times are Eastern, and all records use the October 11 snapshot.
Schedule exceptions: Highland Springs’ Tuesday listing is already past and is not previewed as upcoming. Its remaining-week status needs confirmation; see Region 5C. Petersburg’s Friday game follows Meadowbrook’s reciprocal schedule entry, with the conflict explained in Region 3A. Louisa County’s kickoff has conflicting listings, noted in Region 4B.
