Baseball Analytics & Rankings ⚾

The Baseball section of Beyond the Standings focuses on evaluating true team and player performance using run-based and production-based metrics rather than game-by-game results alone.

Baseball outcomes are inherently volatile. A strong team can lose a low-scoring game due to sequencing, bullpen variance, or a single swing. Because of this, baseball analytics rely less on individual wins and losses and more on what teams and players consistently produce over time.

Beyond the Standings baseball rankings reflect that philosophy.

Team Rankings

MLB team rankings are based on runs scored and runs allowed, blended with actual win–loss results. This approach uses a Bill James–style Pythagorean expectation adjusted for the season’s run environment, producing ratings that better reflect underlying team quality than standings alone.

Player Batting Rankings

Individual hitters are ranked using Total Offensive Performance (TOP), a composite rate statistic that captures:

  • Power production
  • On-base value
  • Baserunning contribution
    normalized by plate appearances.

Filtered and final reports apply official and in-season qualification thresholds to ensure fair comparisons.

Pitching Rankings (Batting Against)

Pitchers are evaluated based on offensive production allowed rather than traditional pitching stats. Lower TOP allowed values indicate stronger pitching performance, with final-season reports grouped by workload tiers.
