Indian River at King’s Fork brings together Class 5’s top two teams, both unbeaten in this week’s rankings. Petersburg at Thomas Dale pairs two more unbeaten teams, while Madison at Oakton and Woodgrove at Loudoun County offer direct comparisons among regional contenders with two regular-season weekends remaining.
Seven games to watch
All seven featured games are scheduled for Friday, October 30, at 7 p.m. Eastern, in the VHSL master schedule. Class and region ranks refer to each team’s own classification.
Indian River at King’s Fork: class 5’s unbeaten leaders
Indian River (8–0) at King’s Fork (7–0) — Friday, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 5 #1 / Class 5 #2. Region ranks: 5A #1 / 5B #1.
Indian River brings the larger scoring totals into a meeting of Class 5’s first two teams. Its 413 points scored and 54 allowed give it a 359-point differential through eight games. King’s Fork has scored 262 and allowed 68 in seven. Both lead their regions, making this a useful comparison across 5A and 5B as the regular season winds down.
The challenge for King’s Fork is to interrupt an offense averaging 51.6 points per game. Its own defense has allowed fewer than ten points per game, so there is substance behind that possibility. Indian River has the stronger raw scoring profile, but the different opponents and game counts keep those totals from being a prediction.
Petersburg at Thomas Dale: two unbeaten defensive profiles
Petersburg (7–0) at Thomas Dale (8–0) — Friday, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 3 #1 / Class 6 #3. Region ranks: 3A #1 / 6A #2.
The frozen rankings list Petersburg at 7–0 and Thomas Dale at 8–0. Petersburg leads Class 3 and Region 3A; Thomas Dale is third in Class 6 and second in 6A. The different classifications make this more than a comparison of places in a single ranking table.
Defense is the central thread: Petersburg has allowed 32 points in seven games, while Thomas Dale has allowed 43 in eight. Petersburg has scored 246 points against Thomas Dale’s 222. Can the visiting offense sustain that production against another defense with a low season total? These figures describe the local snapshot; they do not adjust for the teams’ different schedules.
Highland Springs at Varina: region leaders meet
Highland Springs (7–1) at Varina (6–1–1) — Friday, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 5 #5 / Class 4 #1. Region ranks: 5C #1 / 4B #1.
Highland Springs leads Region 5C at 7–1. Varina leads Class 4 and Region 4B at 6–1–1. This is an opportunity for each to test its regional standing against a highly ranked opponent from another classification.
Varina has scored 305 points and allowed 102 across eight games, including its tie. Highland Springs has scored 276 and allowed 108 across the same number of games. The defensive totals are close; Varina has the edge in raw scoring output. That suggests watching whether Highland Springs can limit Varina’s possessions and keep the game inside its usual defensive range.
James Madison at Oakton: a direct region 6d test
James Madison (6–2) at Oakton (8–0) — Friday, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 6 #7 / Class 6 #1. Region ranks: 6D #3 / 6D #1.
Oakton enters at 8–0, first in both Class 6 and Region 6D. Madison is 6–2, seventh in the class and third in the region. A visit from another top-seven Class 6 team gives Oakton a substantial late-season test.
Oakton has scored 346 points to Madison’s 185, a sizable difference over eight games each. Madison has allowed fewer points, 116 against Oakton’s 155. Madison’s route to a competitive game starts with containing that larger offensive output; Oakton will try to make the visitor score beyond its season pace. Neither scoring total alone accounts for schedule strength.
Brookville at Jefferson Forest: an unbeaten host with a striking defense
Brookville (7–1) at Jefferson Forest (8–0) — Friday, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 3 #14 / Class 4 #2. Region ranks: 3C #6 / 4D #1.
Jefferson Forest is 8–0, second in Class 4 and first in Region 4D. Brookville remains a strong 7–1, although its Class 3 #14 and Region 3C #6 positions place it just outside the regional table below. This featured game keeps an important challenger in view.
Jefferson Forest has allowed just 26 points in eight games while scoring 399. Brookville has scored 252 and allowed 157. The visitor needs to turn its offensive production into sustained scoring against a defense with an unusually small season total. For Jefferson Forest, another strong opponent offers a chance to reinforce a profile that is impressive on both sides of the ball.
Woodgrove at Loudoun County: first against third in region 4c
Woodgrove (7–1) at Loudoun County (6–2) — Friday, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 4 #5 / Class 4 #9. Region ranks: 4C #1 / 4C #3.
Woodgrove leads Region 4C at 7–1; Loudoun County is third at 6–2. Their Class 4 ranks, fifth and ninth, make this one of the week’s clearest direct comparisons among regional contenders.
Woodgrove has scored 382 points, averaging 47.8 per game, while Loudoun County has scored 223. Their points allowed are much closer: 100 for Woodgrove and 112 for Loudoun County. The home team needs its defense to keep that offensive gap from defining the evening. Woodgrove can strengthen its regional case by carrying its scoring production onto another contender’s field.
Heritage (Lynchburg) at Liberty Christian: a crowded region 3c race
Heritage (Lynchburg) (6–2) at Liberty Christian (7–1) — Friday, 7 p.m. Class ranks: Class 3 #11 / Class 3 #4. Region ranks: 3C #5 / 3C #2.
Liberty Christian is second in Region 3C and fourth in Class 3 at 7–1. Heritage is fifth in the region and eleventh in the class at 6–2. Both make the regional top five, and this matchup provides a direct comparison late in the regular season.
The defenses have nearly matching totals: 72 points allowed by Liberty Christian and 75 by Heritage, each in eight games. Liberty Christian has scored 270 against Heritage’s 249. Those relatively close totals make this more intriguing than the seven-place class ranking gap might suggest. Heritage needs to turn that defensive consistency into a road performance against the higher-ranked host.

Sources and schedule notes
Statistics are frozen to the matching Week 9 class and region rankings updated October 25, 2026, at 6:26:41 p.m.: class rankings and region rankings. These are Beyond the Standings rankings, distinct from official VHSL playoff points. The source pages may subsequently change; the records and totals here retain this cutoff. Averages divide season points by wins, losses and ties combined. External records have not been substituted for local records.
Home/away, dates, kickoff times and explicit byes were checked October 29 against the master schedule currently linked from VHSL football. That PDF is still dated September 23. Reciprocal team entries were checked where available. This is a master-schedule baseline, not confirmation that every school has issued a fresh announcement.
Newer corroboration includes John Champe’s GoFan event, showing Jefferson (West Virginia) visiting Thursday at 7 p.m.; Riverside’s NFHS event, showing Lightridge visiting Thursday at 6 p.m.; and Park View’s school band calendar, cited above. Current Highland Springs–Varina and Petersburg–Thomas Dale listings also show Friday at 7 p.m.
Names were matched across sources, including Kings Fork/King’s Fork, Booker T. Washington/B. T. Washington, Lunenburg Central/Central (Lunenburg), and the separately identified Heritage, Salem, Patrick Henry and James River schools. Jefferson (West Virginia) and Perry County Central (Kentucky) are outside the local VHSL ranking set; their records are intentionally omitted. Rappahannock County is distinct from Rappahannock in Warsaw.
All listed games fall October 29–31; no completed game is previewed. Missing entries are not treated as byes. Confirm host-school announcements before traveling, especially for the two unresolved source conflicts noted in Regions 1A and 1B.
