Home-field advantage is one of the oldest assumptions in college football. The home team has its own crowd, avoids a road trip, and plays in familiar surroundings. Sportsbooks know that too, so the point spread already accounts for the expected advantage.
That raises a different question: after the spread is applied, how often does the home team actually cover?
I reviewed 3,397 unique college football games from the 2022 through 2025 seasons using historical DraftKings point spreads and final scores. The broad result was close to a coin flip, but the way teams arrived there was more interesting. Both home favorites and home underdogs finished slightly above 50 percent across the full four-season sample.
Home-team ATS records by spread range
The table below shows the home team’s against-the-spread record. Records are listed as wins, losses, and pushes.

Home favorites finished almost exactly at 50 percent
Home favorites went 1102-1094-33 against the spread across the four seasons. Excluding pushes, that is a 50.2 percent cover rate.
The size of the spread mattered. Home favorites laying 20 or more points produced the strongest result, covering 52.4 percent of the time. Short home favorites laying no more than 4.5 points had the weakest record at 266-288-12, a 48.0 percent cover rate.
| Home favorite range | ATS record | Cover rate* |
|---|---|---|
| 20 or more | 318-289-5 | 52.4% |
| 10–19.5 | 283-298-8 | 48.7% |
| 5–9.5 | 235-219-8 | 51.8% |
| 0.5–4.5 | 266-288-12 | 48.0% |
| All home favorites | 1102-1094-33 | 50.2% |
The results also moved considerably from season to season. Home favorites overall covered only 46.9 percent in 2022 but rose to 53.3 percent in 2025. That swing is a useful reminder that a strong result in one season may not persist.

Home underdogs performed better
Home underdogs went a combined 595-551-18, covering 51.9 percent of decisions. Every underdog range finished above 50 percent over the full sample.
| Home underdog range | ATS record | Cover rate* |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5–4.5 | 218-208-6 | 51.2% |
| 5–9.5 | 166-160-6 | 50.9% |
| 10–19.5 | 165-142-5 | 53.7% |
| 20 or more | 46-41-1 | 52.9% |
| All home underdogs | 595-551-18 | 51.9% |
Home underdogs getting between 10 and 19.5 points posted the best percentage at 53.7 percent. The largest home underdogs followed at 52.9 percent, but that group contained only 88 games. Across all four ranges, home-underdog cover rates landed between 50.9 and 53.7 percent.
What the results do—and do not—show
The four-season sample shows that home underdogs performed somewhat better than home favorites, but it does not establish a reliable betting system.
A standard sportsbook price requires a bettor to win approximately 52.4 percent of wagers just to break even at -110 odds. The 51.9 percent combined home-underdog rate and 50.2 percent home-favorite rate both fall short of that threshold. Two individual ranges reached it after rounding, but a narrow historical result does not guarantee a repeatable edge.
There are also important limits to the data:
- The analysis uses DraftKings spreads rather than a consensus across multiple sportsbooks.
- Each line is a historical snapshot taken around 12:00 UTC on the day of the game, not necessarily the closing spread.
- Cover percentages exclude pushes.
- The 2024 data contained one repeated event, which was counted only once.
- Four pick’em games are included in the overall sample but not in a favorite or underdog range.
- The results describe these four completed seasons and do not guarantee that the same patterns will continue.
The main takeaway
Across 3,397 games, college football home teams did not produce one overwhelming spread advantage. Home favorites covered 50.2 percent of decisions, while home underdogs covered 51.9 percent.
The most successful favorite range was 20 points or more. The weakest was the short-favorite range from 0.5 to 4.5 points. Home underdogs finished above 50 percent in every spread range, with the 10-to-19.5-point group producing the strongest result.
The numbers offer useful context for evaluating home-field advantage, but they also show why broad betting trends deserve caution. Once the point spread accounts for what everyone already knows, most categories move back toward the middle.
*Cover rates exclude pushes.
